garden wall

Common defects

Garden Wall:

1.    Ground movement which leads to foundation failure.

2.    Thermal movement which will make the wall expand.

3.    Pug cracking over time or shrinking when it dries, also it could crack by the effects of the weather which will slowly weaken the pug over time.

Materials:

Pug – Pug can be sloppy and loose so it will drip everywhere and take ages to go hard, also if it is very runny then the brick will push down and compress the pug pushing it out the sides.

Bricks – By using certain bricks (like cheap ones) they will crack quicker and wont be very good quality. Certain bricks are designed for outside work so will be stronger against the elements but in this case as we are repairing a wall we have to match the existing bricks.

Method Statement for quote

Firstly, the task my company will be doing is removing the two bricks that are cracked out of the wall and replacing them with two new common facing bricks.

I will need 3 men on this job, a professional bricklaying/repairing and labouring. The reason I asked for 3 is it will make the job 3 times quicker and end up costing you much less money.

The way I will start this job is to drill through the mortar around the bricks we are taking out until the bricks come loose.  Once the mortar is drilled enough for the brick to come out of the wall we will remove and dispose the bricks. Next we will chisel and wire brush the excess mortar form inside the wall so when we get to lay the bricks, they will fit perfectly. Once the excess is removed we will use a compressed air canister and blow out all the dust from the wall, we do this as mortar wont set on a dusty surface.                                                                        We will mix up the mortar by using a ratio of 5 sharp sand to 1 cement. Lastly we will fill mortar into the holes and set two common bricks into it, once laid and dried we will brush the whole wall down to a perfect finish and then by jointing the pug we will make it look nice.
